Malaysia studies upgrading Federal Route FT136 to four lanes
The Ministry of Works is evaluating a proposal to upgrade Federal Route FT136, spanning from Serdang to Kulim, from two lanes to four. Deputy Minister of Works Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Maslan stated that the study will incorporate environmental, social, and traffic impact assessments (EIA, SIA, and TIA).
Currently, the ministry is managing the appointment of consultants and land acquisition processes to facilitate an application for funding under Rolling Plan 2 of the Thirteenth Malaysia Plan (RMK13) to the Ministry of Economy. Regarding frequent road damage in the area, the ministry identified vehicle movement, weather conditions, and paving materials as contributing factors, suggesting the use of special mix materials to improve durability.
While traffic census data for 2025 indicates the current service level is LOS A, the ministry has prioritized preliminary works for the upgrade, including design and land acquisition for specific sections in Kulim, Kedah. The ministry is awaiting formal requests from the Kedah state government to proceed with specific overtaking lane constructions.
