Malaysia targets 60,000 engineers and RM500 billion in semiconductor investment by 2030
Malaysia has set ambitious targets under its National Semiconductor Strategy to attract RM500 billion in semiconductor investments and train 60,000 highly skilled local engineers by 2030.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim emphasized that the private sector must play a central role in shaping this talent pipeline. Through the TVET 2.0 reform, the government aims to align technical and vocational training more closely with industry needs, specifically focusing on artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and renewable energy. He noted that companies are best positioned to understand evolving technological requirements and should partner with training institutions from the early stages of development.
Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi added that while talent development is crucial, the nation must move beyond being a participant in the global supply chain. He stressed the importance of translating local expertise into homegrown technology, intellectual property, and Malaysian-owned companies to ensure long-term global competitiveness.
