Malaysia Tightens Hiking Regulations Amid Rise in Rescue Cases

Malaysia's government is tightening hiking rules nationwide after a surge in lost‑hiker incidents linked to social‑media influencer trends. In the first five months of 2026, 52 hikers were reported missing or stranded, a rise of nearly 30 % compared with the same period the previous year, according to the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department.

The new measures include mandatory guides in 189 high‑risk locations, stricter pre‑climb screening (health declarations, medical history checks and insurance), and bans on "compressed hikes" in many mountainous areas. Minimum multi‑day climbing periods are now required for certain routes, and permits remain compulsory for state parks and forests. Deputy Minister Syed Ibrahim Syed Noy said the steps aim to reduce risks caused by hikers chasing Instagram or TikTok content, while certified guide Norimah Abd Karim warned that some participants neglect safety to produce appealing footage.
