Malaysia to absorb up to RM45 billion in fuel subsidies

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has announced that the Malaysian government is prepared to absorb rising fuel subsidy costs, which are projected to reach between RM42 billion and RM45 billion annually. This decision comes in response to surging global crude oil prices, which have risen from approximately USD70 per barrel to between USD120 and USD130 per barrel.

The government aims to maintain the price of RON95 petrol at RM1.99 per liter to protect low- and middle-income households from the escalating cost of living. Anwar Ibrahim stated that the government should bear the financial burden rather than passing the costs to citizens, noting that market-driven price adjustments would significantly increase daily expenses for families.

Speaking at the launch of the National Cost of Living Action Plan 2030 (NCLAP30) in Melaka, the Prime Minister rejected claims that generous subsidies foster government dependency. He emphasized that the policy is designed to reflect the economic realities faced by citizens regarding essential needs such as commuting to work and transporting children to school.
