Malaysia to begin phased repatriation of 5,000 Myanmar refugees
Malaysia's Ministry of Home Affairs has finalized the first phase of a voluntary repatriation program for 5,000 Myanmar refugees. On September 29, 2026, the first group of 1,476 identified individuals will be returned to Myanmar using two warships and one hospital ship provided by the Myanmar Navy.
Following this initial phase, approximately 4,008 other Myanmar nationals, primarily from the Rohingya ethnic group, will be processed under the Refugee Registration Document (DPP) program. As of August 15, 2026, Malaysia reported 10,388 Myanmar nationals in immigration detention centers, though officials noted this figure includes all detained citizens and not exclusively refugees.
In a separate context regarding the broader regional crisis, 16 foreign diplomatic missions in Bangladesh—including representatives from the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and the European Union—have urged for the rights of the Rohingya to return to Myanmar to be respected. The missions highlighted that escalating conflict and humanitarian needs in Rakhine State currently prevent safe and dignified voluntary repatriation.
