Malaysia to introduce Artificial Intelligence Bill by 2027
Malaysia plans to introduce an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Bill in Parliament, targeted for the first quarter of 2027. Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo stated that the legislation aims to create a comprehensive structure that gathers multi-sector expertise to provide strategic guidance for the nation as digital technology evolves.
The government intends to adopt a risk-based approach, where the level of control and responsibility is assessed according to the role, control level, and potential harm of an AI system throughout its lifecycle. While acknowledging the benefits of AI for business and daily life, the Minister emphasized the need to understand and mitigate associated risks through appropriate regulatory frameworks.
In response to concerns regarding cybercrime, including AI-driven scams and video manipulation, the Ministry of Digital and regulatory agencies such as the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) are prioritizing digital security to address emerging technological threats.
