Malaysia to invest RM5 billion in digital infrastructure and animation IP

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil announced a RM5 billion allocation for the National Digital Network (JENDELA) project to strengthen Malaysia's internet infrastructure. The initiative aims to expand 4G coverage to all Orang Asli villages and enhance connectivity along 7,000 kilometers of roads and 1,700 kilometers of rail routes. This infrastructure is expected to bolster the digital economy, which is projected to contribute over 25.5 percent to the national GDP.

In addition to connectivity, the government is focusing on the creative economy. Malaysia aims to develop 20 new world-class animation intellectual properties (IP) to compete globally. With over 5,000 local animators, the country seeks to transition from providing production services to developing original content for international markets, utilizing over-the-top (OTT) streaming platforms to reach wider audiences.
