Malaysia to prioritize local industry in defense contracts

Malaysia's Ministry of Defence has announced a strategic shift to prioritize the local defense industry by requiring defense contracts to provide significant value-added benefits to the nation.

Defense Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin stated that companies awarded procurement contracts must go beyond mere asset delivery. Key requirements include technology transfer, the development of local vendors, the creation of jobs for Malaysian Armed Forces veterans, and the production of local components. He noted that at least 30 percent of components for purchased assets should be locally sourced to reduce costs and strengthen national capabilities.

As part of this initiative, the Ministry will not renew contracts for 18 foreign companies currently performing maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services, except for work still under manufacturer warranty. Foreign firms are encouraged to either collaborate with local companies or assist in developing them. This move aims to reduce Malaysia's reliance on foreign entities for basic components and leverage the country's technical university graduates to build a robust domestic defense ecosystem.
