Malaysia to provide 100,000 free AI subscriptions under Budget 2027
During the presentation of Budget 2027 in the Dewan Rakyat, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the addition of 100,000 free artificial intelligence (AI) subscriptions for youth. This expansion includes access to new applications such as ChatGPT, following positive reception to previous initiatives. The move aims to help young people master digital skills in high-potential fields like coding, data science, and quantum technology.
To protect national interests, the government is planning the development of a Sovereign AI Cloud to ensure that citizens' data and strategic national information remain under Malaysian control. Additionally, RM6 billion has been allocated to enhance research, development, and commercialization across various ministries. AI Malaysia Berhad will receive nearly RM15 million to strengthen a secure and ethical AI ecosystem, supporting the goal of producing 200,000 skilled workers in the field.
Further digital support includes RM30 million via the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) to assist 4,000 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in adopting AI and automation. The Rakyat Digital platform will also provide free access to over 16,000 courses and professional certificates through partnerships with Coursera and other leading organizations.
