Malaysia's Tabung Haji RCI Report and Defamation Suit Spotlight Governance Issues

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report on the Lembaga Tabung Haji was withheld for three years to prevent panic among depositors, but the Cabinet will now consider releasing it. He noted that the agency, now under new chair Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Hussain, has been restored and recently received international recognition as the best Hajj management institution.

Separately, MARA chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki announced a RM5 million defamation suit against two individuals who linked him to the Tabung Haji controversy, pledging to donate any awarded damages to the MARA Education Foundation. Youth UMNO leader Hafiz Ariffin and other politicians called for the report’s timely disclosure and impartial legal action against any wrongdoing.
