Malaysia to strengthen e-commerce platform regulations

The Malaysian government has announced plans to strengthen the regulation of e-commerce platforms, including the implementation of registration requirements for companies based outside the country. The decision, directed by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, will be carried out by the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Communications.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil stated that the move aims to protect consumer rights and ensure product safety. Specifically, the government wants to ensure that electrical and electronic products meet SIRIM standards and that products labeled as halal comply with national halal certification requirements. The government clarified that it does not intend to shut down or restrict platforms, but rather to establish a regulatory framework through consultation with industry players.

Data from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission shows that between January 1, 2025, and August 25, 2026, the commission received 1,964 complaints related to e-commerce platforms and products.
