Malaysia to toughen penalties for illegal racing from November 1
Amendments to the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333) in Malaysia are expected to come into force on November 1, introducing harsher penalties for illegal racing and dangerous driving. The changes, which have already been approved by Parliament, aim to target “Mat Rempit” (motorcycle hooligans) and street nuisance activities.
Datuk Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan, a senior enforcement director at the Road Transport Department (JPJ), stated that the new regulations could lead to imprisonment for offenders. The amendments to Section 42(a) are intended to provide investigating officers with stronger legal tools to take action against those involved in road hooliganism.
The legislation is currently awaiting the final gazetting process and further input from the Attorney-General’s Chambers. Authorities noted that illegal racing is a national safety concern rather than a localized issue, requiring continuous monitoring and cooperation between the JPJ and the police, particularly in areas like Sultan Ismail Petra Airport where such activities have been frequently reported.
