Malaysia traffic police clarify emergency vehicle and escort protocols

The Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) has emphasized that emergency vehicles must prioritize public safety, even when using sirens and beacon lights. Following a fatal accident involving a family at the Maju Junction intersection in Kuala Lumpur, officials stated that drivers of emergency vehicles must ensure the way is clear and safe before proceeding through red lights.

Authorities also clarified that the power to control traffic and conduct escorts is the exclusive right of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) under Section 21 of the Police Act 1967. Other agencies, private marshals, or associations do not have the legal authority to obstruct or direct public road users to clear paths for their own convoys. Additionally, the JSPT warned that vehicle owners installing unauthorized warning lights may face action under Section 119 of the Road Transport Act 1987.
