Malaysia Transport Minister addresses bus ticket sales policy

Transport Minister Anthony Loke has addressed concerns regarding a new policy requiring express bus ticket sales to be conducted through licensed terminals, effective November 1. Loke stated that the policy aims to create a more organized system and protect the interests of both bus operators and passengers.

The move specifically targets online travel agents (OTAs), particularly those based overseas, which collect commissions without providing terminal management services or infrastructure. Loke noted that because many OTAs are not subject to licensing by the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD), it is difficult for authorities to regulate sales or manage refunds when services are not provided.

To mitigate impact on bus companies, the government will monitor terminal charges and commissions to ensure they do not exceed the rates currently taken by overseas OTAs. Loke emphasized that the goal is a win-win situation where terminals receive revenue to maintain facilities and infrastructure, while bus operators can still utilize their own online platforms.
