Malaysia warns Houthi threat to Bab el-Mandeb Strait endangers global trade

Malaysia’s foreign ministry has expressed strong concern over recent Houthi threats to block or close the Bab el‑Mandeb Strait, a vital maritime corridor linking Asia and Europe. The ministry warned that any disruption would impact international trade, global supply chains, energy security and worldwide economic stability.

Kuala Lumpur urged all parties to respect the freedom of navigation and to adhere to international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Malaysian vessels were advised to remain vigilant and follow the latest maritime safety guidance. The statements were made against a backdrop of heightened tensions in the Red Sea region, including a Houthi declaration targeting Saudi shipping and ongoing U.S. actions against Iran that have already strained the nearby Hormuz corridor.
