Malaysian Armed Forces reviews volunteer allowance rates

The Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) is reviewing the allowance rates for its volunteer forces to encourage higher participation in training and activities. General Tan Sri Malek Razak Sulaiman stated that current hourly rates, which were last adjusted around 2022 and currently stand at RM8.00 and RM9.80 depending on the category, are considered too low for current economic conditions.

Strengthening the volunteer forces is viewed as a strategic move to bolster the manpower of the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Active participation in these volunteer units can also provide members with an advantage during the screening process if they wish to be absorbed into the permanent military service.

Additionally, the ATM is planning to improve training facilities and infrastructure. For university students participating in the Reserve Officer Training Unit (PALAPES), incentives such as additional academic credits and priority in graduate officer recruitment schemes are being offered to encourage long-term military careers.
