Malaysian corporate initiatives support autism skill development
Several Malaysian-based initiatives are focusing on the skill development and economic empowerment of autistic individuals through targeted corporate support.
La gourmet, marking its 31st anniversary, concluded its ‘A Caring Heart’ campaign by donating RM100,000 to the Gem & Bread Special Needs Support Group. Managing Director Jean Yeap stated the funds are intended as an investment in potential, specifically to hire specialized instructors and develop programs in arts, baking, cooking, music, and practical skills to foster independence among autistic children and adults.
In a separate initiative, STARTRADER’s corporate social responsibility program, STARCARES, commissioned a 30-piece set of handmade tote bags from the Autism Cafe Project. Rather than a traditional donation, the arrangement functioned as a commercial purchase of goods produced by autistic adolescents and young adults. Peter Karsten, CEO of STARTRADER, noted that purchasing finished goods at a commercial standard serves to validate the capability of the makers and meet real-world demand.
