Malaysian couple suspected of recruiting drug mules for Japan operation

A Malaysian couple from Sarawak is suspected of masterminding a drug smuggling operation involving five individuals arrested at Haneda Airport in Tokyo, Japan. The group was caught on October 10 with approximately five kilograms of cocaine.

According to Datuk Hussein Omar Khan, Director of the Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department, the couple allegedly recruited three friends by inviting them on a vacation to Japan. The suspects were reportedly paid RM8,000 each to carry a pair of shoes containing the drugs.

Investigations are ongoing to determine if the group has a history of similar operations or broader involvement with international drug syndicates. Authorities have advised citizens to remain vigilant against travel offers that require carrying items such as shoes, bags, or other equipment for others.
