Malaysian court sentences police officer and driver in separate fatal incidents

In two separate legal proceedings in Malaysia, individuals have been sentenced for fatal incidents involving reckless driving.

Deputy Superintendent Mohd Nazri Abdul Razak, 47, was sentenced by the Ipoh High Court to seven years and six months in prison after pleading guilty to causing the death of 17-year-old student Muhammad Zaharif Affendi Muhd Zamrie in December 2023. The court also ordered Mohd Nazri to pay RM50,000 in compensation to the victim's father, or face an additional year of imprisonment.

In Tawau, an Indonesian national named Risna, 26, was sentenced by the Magistrate's Court to 30 months in prison and a RM5,000 fine. Risna pleaded guilty to dangerous driving without a valid license, which resulted in the death of a 24-year-old friend in September. The prosecution emphasized the need for a strict sentence to serve as a public deterrent regarding road safety.
