Malaysian Cyber Consumer Association proposes MyDigital ID for social media age verification
The Malaysian Cyber Consumer Association has proposed that the government utilize MyDigital ID for age verification on social media platforms, rather than requiring users to upload MyKad (identity cards) or passports.
Mohamad Sirajuddin Jalil, president of the association, emphasized the distinction between age verification and identity verification. He suggested that MyDigital ID could generate a verification slip to prove a user meets age requirements without exposing sensitive personal identification documents. This approach aims to mitigate the risk of data leaks and identity theft that could occur if users upload physical ID copies to social media platforms.
Concerns were also raised regarding the ability of minors to bypass current restrictions. Reports indicate that individuals under 16 can still register for social media accounts by falsifying their birth years, as there is currently no mandatory identity verification process in place.
