Malaysian film industry sees mixed box office results
The Malaysian film industry is seeing varied commercial results in 2026. While some local productions have surpassed the RM10 million mark, other significant works, including those representing Malaysia at the Academy Awards, have struggled to achieve high box office returns.
Actor and producer Rosyam Nor noted that audiences should not be blamed for low turnout, emphasizing that commercial value, star power, and effective marketing are essential for success. He argued that even epic films require strong packaging and promotion to attract viewers.
In contrast, the horror film ‘Munafik: Melawan Iblis’ has seen a strong start, earning RM2 million within its first six days of release in Malaysia. Executive producer Dato’ Dr Yusof Haslam expressed gratitude for the initial support and stated that the production team will continue to intensify promotional efforts to maintain momentum.
