Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency strengthens regional cooperation

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (Maritim Malaysia) is enhancing regional cooperation through intelligence sharing and regular meetings to detect maritime threats. Director General Admiral Mohd. Rosli Abdullah stated that intelligence from neighboring countries is vital for tracking cross-border movements. He highlighted that intelligence-led operations allow for more targeted deployment of assets and personnel based on risk assessments.

Recent international collaborations include a memorandum of understanding with Japan signed in August and a planned agreement with the Korea Coast Guard later this year. The agency also noted recent visits from the Vietnam Coast Guard and the USCGC Bertholf, with a visit from the China Coast Guard scheduled for November.

In a separate enforcement action, Maritim Malaysia seized two unregistered pump boats carrying 1,750 liters of petrol, valued at approximately RM18,000, near Kampung Sinakut Tengah in Lahad Datu. The seizure, conducted under Op Sejahtera and Op Tiris 4.0, occurred following intelligence reports. The suspects fled the scene, leaving the fuel and four pump engines behind. The case is being investigated under the Control of Supplies Act 1961 for suspected smuggling to a neighboring country.
