Maldives and Malaysia agree to trade deal and USD 100M facility

During an official state visit to the Maldives, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu held high-level talks to strengthen bilateral ties across several sectors, including trade, investment, defense, and Islamic affairs.

Key outcomes of the discussions include Malaysia's agreement in principle to provide a USD 100 million financial facility to the Maldives, following a request from the Maldives Monetary Authority. The two nations also agreed to begin negotiations on a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) to expand commercial opportunities.

Additional agreements reached include the exchange of Memoranda of Understanding regarding defense and Islamic affairs. The leaders also discussed potential cooperation with the Malaysian energy company Petronas for oil and mineral exploration in the Maldives. To further facilitate cooperation, the leaders proposed holding a meeting of the Malaysia-Maldives Joint Commission in Kuala Lumpur before the end of the year.

Prime Minister Anwar also addressed social issues, pledging to explore measures to ease visa processes for the parents of Maldivian students currently studying in Malaysia.
