Malaysian political dispute erupts over rice industry criticism
A political dispute has emerged in Malaysia following a police report filed by Amanah Selangor Communications Director Abbas Azmi against social media influencer Zainal Rashid Ahmad (ZRA). The report concerns ZRA’s comments regarding the management of the national paddy and rice industry, which Amanah claims contradict official facts from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM).
ZRA has defended his statements, asserting that his commentary is based on the 2024 Paddy and Rice Industry Report prepared by the Malaysia Competition Commission (MyCC). He noted that the report addresses issues such as rice price manipulation and the sale of paddy seeds above ceiling prices. ZRA challenged the necessity of invoking Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, suggesting that the government should focus on communicating its data effectively rather than using legal measures.
In response, Pemuda Pas Deputy Chief Mohd Hafez Sabri criticized the use of police reports to silence critics. He argued that political disputes regarding the welfare of farmers should be addressed through open factual explanations rather than legal pressure, which he suggested could stifle freedom of speech and democratic discourse.
