Malaysian teen faces trial for school murder amid online radicalisation debate

A 14‑year‑old boy in Malaysia has been charged with the murder of 16‑year‑old student Yap Shing Xuen, whose body was found stabbed in a school restroom in a Kuala Lumpur suburb in October last year. The trial could result in a prison term of 30 to 40 years, with the death penalty excluded because the accused is a minor under Malaysian law.

The case has ignited a national debate over the influence of social‑media platforms, online radicalisation, and the so‑called "manosphere" on youth violence. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim linked the surge in school‑based attacks to unrestricted mobile‑phone and internet use among children and announced stricter regulations to limit minors' exposure to violent or extremist digital content.
