Malaysia's Azalina Othman Said Pushes Attorney General‑Prosecutor Split

Law and Institutional Reform Minister Azalina Othman Said announced that a constitutional amendment to separate the roles of the Attorney General and the Public Prosecutor is slated to move forward in October, after the recommendations are presented to the Conference of Rulers. The change is part of a broader reform agenda that also includes a proposal to limit the Prime Minister’s term of office.

Azalina said the government has already implemented 21 major reform initiatives between 2022 and 2025, such as abolishing the mandatory death penalty, establishing an anti‑bullying tribunal, strengthening legal‑aid structures, and enhancing child‑protection and cyber‑security measures. The reforms aim to strengthen governance, improve institutional accountability, and reinforce checks and balances within Malaysia’s political system.
