Chery recalls Omoda 5 in Malaysia after rear axle detachment

Chery Auto Malaysia has launched a recall for 8,878 units of its Omoda 5 SUV, specifically affecting the C and H variants. The recall follows a viral incident in Johor Bahru on October 6, where a vehicle’s rear axle and suspension assembly detached while in motion.

An investigation by Chery revealed that welds on the rear axle trailing arms in the affected production batch may lack sufficient strength, posing a risk of rupture under extreme conditions. The company stated that the specific design using these components has already been discontinued in favor of newer models like the Chery O5, which utilizes a multi-link rear suspension.

In response to the incident, Malaysia’s Road Transport Department (JPJ) has temporarily suspended the Vehicle Type Approval (VTA) for the Omoda 5, halting all new registrations of the model until a technical investigation is complete. JPJ plans to conduct technical audits of the production and assembly lines, as well as the axle component suppliers, to inspect quality control and welding procedures.

Chery Malaysia is offering free comprehensive inspections and necessary component replacements for affected owners. Customers can verify their vehicle status using their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the official Chery website.
