Malaysia's KWAP faces corruption probe over eFishery investment and pension funding shortfall
The Malaysian Anti‑Corruption Commission (SPRM) will continue to investigate the Kumpulan Wang Persaraan (KWAP) investment in aquaculture technology startup eFishery, even though an initial review found no evidence of wrongdoing. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stressed that any corruption or mismanagement would not be tolerated and ordered KWAP to fully cooperate with the probe, emphasizing transparency, accountability and proper due‑diligence in investment decisions.
Separately, Anwar noted that despite KWAP’s investment earnings reaching tens of billions of ringgit, the fund cannot fully cover the long‑term pension liabilities of the country. He said the government will not relax pension withdrawals, but will allow limited access under flexible and welfare accounts for education and Hajj purposes, underscoring the need for political resolve to sustain the pension system.
