Malaysia's MCMC blocks 101.66 million scam calls

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), working with local telecommunications providers, blocked 101.66 million scam or spoof calls between February and August 2026.

Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching attributed this success to the Inter Operator Spoofing Gateway, an initiative launched at the start of 2026. The system targets Caller ID spoofing, a tactic where international scammers disguise their numbers to appear as local Malaysian telco networks. The gateway uses real-time location verification to identify and block calls that claim local identities but are registered abroad.

Additionally, the MCMC is scheduled to meet with Meta to discuss public complaints regarding blocked or inaccessible WhatsApp accounts. The commission has requested clarification from Meta to address reports of hacked or disabled accounts.
