Malaysia launches MPMS 1 patrol vessel built in Turkey

Malaysia and Turkey have strengthened their strategic defense cooperation with the launch of the Multi-Purpose Mission Ship MPMS 1 at the Desan Shipyard in Turkey. The 99-meter-long, 3,300-tonne vessel is designed to enhance the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency’s capabilities in combating illegal fishing, smuggling, and maritime incursions.

The MPMS 1 is the first of two offshore patrol vessels being constructed under a contract valued at approximately US$150 million. The ship is equipped with advanced systems from Turkish companies ASELSAN and HAVELSAN, including auto cannons, unmanned aerial vehicles, and a helicopter landing pad. It is capable of operating for up to 30 days without resupply.

Malaysian Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and Turkish Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi attended the ceremony. While the vessel is expected to begin its voyage to Malaysia in January, full delivery and handover are targeted for early 2027. The project marks a significant milestone in maritime security and bilateral industrial partnership between the two nations.
