NEKMAT posts RM25 million profit and unveils expansion projects

The National Fishermen Association (NEKMAT) recorded a profit of more than RM25 million for 2025, up from RM11 million the previous year, signalling strong financial management. Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the surplus will support welfare and education funds for fishermen and highlighted that NEKMAT’s new projects are being refined with several ministries before being presented to the Finance Ministry during the 2027 budget discussions. Proposed initiatives include real‑estate development, an oil station, a diesel‑barging vessel, logistics facilities and housing projects for fishing communities, undertaken in partnership with Prosper Sunshine Sdn Bhd. The association also plans to advance collaborations such as a memorandum of understanding with Green Borneo Eco Land and a subsidised social‑security scheme offering protection benefits to fishermen. Dividend payouts to state fisher associations are set to rise to 15 percent, reflecting the improved earnings.

These developments are expected to boost the Malaysian fisheries sector’s contribution to food security and create new revenue streams for the fishing community.
