Malaysia's Waqf Expands via New Consultancy Group and MoUs

At the International Waqf Da'wah Convention 2026 in Kuala Lumpur, Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, also PERKIM president, announced three resolutions to modernise waqf institutions. The flagship proposal calls for a Working Consultancy Group that will review and improve governance structures, promote technology adoption and foster strategic collaboration across government, religious bodies, the corporate sector and academia.

In parallel, Global Wakaf Al‑Quran (GWAQ) signed two strategic memoranda of understanding with PERKIM, Tulus Digital, Islamica, ToyyibPay, i‑Wealth X, MobilityOne and other partners. The agreements aim to build a comprehensive digital waqf ecosystem, establish a National Digital Waqf Bank and eventually an International Digital Waqf Bank, and expand Malaysia’s waqf model throughout ASEAN and beyond. GWAQ chairman Prof. Datuk Dr Mazlan Ahmad said the initiatives are intended to position Malaysia as a global hub for waqf innovation and community development.
