India medical facilities face inquiries over newborn and maternal deaths

In West Bengal, the Malda Medical College and Hospital is under investigation following the deaths of 60 newborns during the first three weeks of August. This includes a spike where 10 infants died in a single day on August 12. Hospital authorities reported that many of the deceased were referred from other government facilities and private nursing homes in critical condition, suffering from complications such as congenital heart disease, respiratory distress, and jaundice. The state health department has requested a comprehensive report and is reviewing the referral system and infrastructure at various medical facilities.

In Madhya Pradesh, the state government has ordered an inquiry into the death of Kalpna Mishra and her newborn at Medical College Rewa. Following allegations of negligence and the circulation of a video showing the patient in distress, authorities have suspended two doctors and two nursing officers. A five-member committee has been formed to examine the circumstances surrounding the maternal death and submit its findings within three days.
