Maldives expands strategic cooperation with China to meet 2040 goals

Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu is seeking to deepen cooperation with China to achieve the nation’s 2040 development goals. The partnership, elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership, focuses on infrastructure, housing, education, and trade. To ensure stability, the administration is drafting legislation to legally protect the 20-year National Development Master Plan from being discontinued by future governments.

Economic ties are being bolstered by the recent activation of the China–Maldives Free Trade Agreement, which covers goods, services, and investment. While the deal aims to increase bilateral trade toward USD 1 billion, it has faced historical criticism regarding potential debt dependency. Additionally, the two nations have agreed to cultural exchanges involving the Maritime Silk Road, including museum exhibitions and joint archaeological research.

Maldivian officials, including Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef, have emphasized that the partnership promotes sustainable development and mutual respect. Current cooperation includes projects like the China–Maldives Friendship Hospital and the Friendship Bridge, alongside discussions regarding a potential currency swap with Malaysia to address foreign exchange pressures.
