Maldives government rejects foreign military surveillance

The Government of the Maldives has reaffirmed its policy that no part of its territory, including its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and maritime trade routes, will be placed under foreign military or operational surveillance. In a statement from the President’s Office, the administration emphasized that the authority to monitor and exercise control over its sovereign domain rests solely with the Maldivian State.

The government highlighted the nation's strategic importance at the crossroads of global maritime commerce, noting that its sea lanes facilitate a significant portion of the world's oil and commercial trade. Maintaining independence and sovereignty is described as an inalienable right and a fundamental policy to ensure regional stability and the unhindered passage of international trade.
