Maldives Local Councils Receive Block Grant Funding
The Maldives Ministry of Finance has allocated a block grant of 1.25 billion rufiyaa (about US$81 million) to local councils for the current fiscal year. The grant includes an additional allocation of roughly US$69 million and reflects a 16.8 % increase over the previous year’s funding. The finance ministry said the money will be used to cover council operating budgets, development projects and other expenditures. A later report confirmed the same block‑grant programme, noting that the allocations are intended to strengthen local government services and improve fiscal management across the islands.
These allocations are part of the government’s ongoing effort to support decentralised administration and ensure that council‑level authorities have sufficient resources to deliver public services.
