Maldives Hithadhoo By‑election: Final Candidate List and Vote Count Released

The by‑election for the Hithadhoo Uthuru Dhaairaa constituency in the Maldives has concluded with the official candidate list confirmed and votes tallied. Election officials reported that 4,121 ballots were initially recorded, with a total of 4,154 votes ultimately counted, including additional votes identified during the verification process.

Party leaders and candidates from the Democratic Party (MDP), the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), and other local groups campaigned intensely, urging supporters to vote and addressing internal disputes over candidate nominations. The MDP’s president, Mohamed Nasheed, called for unity among party members, while opposition factions highlighted concerns over the voting procedure and called for transparent reporting.

The election outcome is expected to influence the balance of power in the national parliament, as the seat was previously held by a member of the ruling coalition. Voter turnout numbers and the final vote distribution were circulated by the election commission, confirming the legitimacy of the process.
