Maldives identified as transit hub for restricted goods to Russia

An investigation has revealed that the Maldives has emerged as an unexpected transit hub for moving restricted goods to Russia, bypassing Western sanctions. According to reports and documents analyzed by the Wall Street Journal, hundreds of millions of dollars worth of cargo—including microchips, aeronautical spare parts, and electronic equipment—have been routed through Malé.

The process involves goods originating from the US, Europe, or China, which are often listed as being sold to third-party buyers. Once the cargo arrives at Velana International Airport, it remains in the transit area rather than being formally imported into the Maldives. Local intermediaries and companies, such as Freight Care and Go Investment, reportedly assist with paperwork and coordinate the transfer of goods onto daily Aeroflot flights bound for Moscow.

While the volume of goods moving through the archipelago is lower than major alternative routes used by Russia—such as those through China, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates—the discovery highlights the ability of logistics networks to find new channels far outside of traditional suspects to sustain the Russian economy and military apparatus.
