Maldives leaders reaffirm commitment to Islamic identity

Maldivian leaders have reaffirmed the nation's commitment to its Islamic identity during commemorations marking 900 years since the country embraced Islam.

President Mohamed Muizzu described the preservation of the Maldives as a 100 per cent Islamic state as a vital safeguard for the nation's cultural sovereignty and independence. He emphasized that Islamic principles have shaped Maldivian social and national life for centuries, contributing to a peaceful society. During the ceremony at Hulhumalé Central Park, President Muizzu announced the establishment of Maldives Awqaf Investments Limited, a national endowment company designed to fund religious activities and support social and infrastructure development through sustainable, Sharia-compliant businesses.

Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom also issued a message commemorating the occasion, stating that Islam serves as the national cornerstone and the foundation of Maldivian nationalism. He expressed his wish for the nation to remain faithful to its religious heritage, noting that previous generations successfully protected the faith against various challenges.
