Maldives President Muizzu orders probe into procurement scandal

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu of the Maldives has called for an immediate halt to payments and a full investigation into a government procurement programme that appears to involve irregularities and misuse of public funds. The controversy centres on the “Bohiyavaahikamu” project, with reported expenditures such as MVR 35,900 for promotional items, MVR 22,000 for additional supplies, and MVR 550 for a fire‑station‑related contract. Muizzu urged ministries, including Finance and Defense, to suspend further disbursements and warned that officials responsible for the irregularities could face legal action. The President’s statements have been echoed by the Minister of State for Defence, who affirmed the need for transparency and accountability. The scandal has prompted public criticism and demands for stricter oversight of government spending.
