Maldives MDP members oppose parliamentary salary increases

Thirteen members of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) in Parliament have called for a reversal of a decision by the Finance Committee to increase the salaries and benefits of the Speaker and ministers. The MDP members issued a joint statement arguing that such increases would add approximately 40 million Rufiyaa to the state's annual expenditure.

They highlighted that the country is facing severe economic challenges, noting that government spending has already exceeded revenue by 4.5 billion Rufiyaa this year. The members expressed concern that increasing official compensation while the public faces rising costs of living and new taxes is irresponsible. Furthermore, they noted that funds intended for local council block grants are being diverted to increase the salaries of councilors and council presidents, which could negatively impact essential services for citizens.
