Abdulla Yameen criticizes MDP opposition efforts in Maldives

Former President Abdulla Yameen has criticized the Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) for failing to effectively hold the current government accountable. Speaking at a PNF meeting in Fuvahmulah, Yameen stated that while the MDP is the country’s strongest opposition party, it has not demonstrated the necessary vigor or leadership required to challenge the administration.

Yameen expressed concern that the MDP has lacked the momentum seen in previous protests and has failed to take adequate action regarding issues such as the Anti-Corruption Commission’s handling of cases. He further questioned whether opposition leaders are truly working in the interest of the citizens or merely pursuing personal interests.

In the Maldives Parliament, discussions have also emerged regarding the Rasmalé project. PNC Parliamentary Group Leader Ibrahim Falah noted that while the MDP previously viewed the project as a wasteful investment, the current political landscape has shifted how the project is perceived. This follows a motion raised by MP Mikaeel Ahmed Naseem, which highlighted potential financial losses and corruption risks related to the September 21 agreement to release land for 99 years without sufficient acquisition costs or rental income.
