Maldives Police launch crackdown on dangerous driving

The Maldives Police Service has launched a nationwide operation to crack down on dangerous and reckless driving. The initiative aims to improve public safety following concerns over road accidents in Malé that have resulted in fatalities.

Authorities are currently identifying and profiling motorists involved in hazardous behaviors, including zigzag driving, reckless overtaking, illegal racing, stunts, excessive speeding, and driving under the influence. The crackdown also targets vehicles with loud silencers or those driven in a manner that causes components to drag on the road.

Under the new measures, drivers may initially be summoned for formal counseling. However, repeat offenders face criminal investigations without prior warning, alongside fines and potential impoundment of vehicles. Police stated that hazardous vehicles will be held in custody for 30 days, after which unclaimed vehicles may be disposed of.

In a significant escalation, the police announced that the identities of repeat offenders will be disclosed to the public. Furthermore, the names of government and state-owned enterprise employees involved in these activities will be shared with their respective employers for potential administrative disciplinary action. Legal action will be pursued against both the driver and the registered owner of the vehicle.
