Maldives political controversy over Rasmalé project and Addu Airport finances
Former Home Minister Imran Abdulla has criticized the government's Rasmalé development project, labeling it a ‘big scam’ that offers no benefit to citizens. Speaking on Raajje TV, Abdulla alleged that the project, which involves transferring land to Eagle Hills, could lead to national bankruptcy and loss of sovereignty. He claimed that canceling the agreement could cost billions of dollars, making it difficult for any future administration to terminate.
Separately, an audit report for Addu International Airport Private Limited reveals a significant increase in revenue. The airport's income rose by 61 million MVR, reaching 94.4 million MVR, largely driven by jet fuel revenue which climbed to 72.9 million MVR. Despite the revenue growth, operating costs increased from 55 million MVR to 112 million MVR, primarily due to jet fuel expenses. However, the report noted that losses were reduced by 10 million MVR compared to the previous year, and employee-related expenditures saw a slight decrease.
