Maldives Ports Limited former executives face corruption charges

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has decided to refer former Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) CEO Mohamed Junaid and former Head of Procurement Abdul Wahhab to the Prosecutor General’s Office for prosecution.

The charges stem from the procurement of 18 air conditioning units during 2016 and 2017. The ACC alleges that the units were purchased at inflated prices, totaling 1,083,998 MVR, in violation of government procurement strategies and regulations.

Investigations revealed that the items were acquired from a private business with ties to the suspects without public announcement or Board of Directors approval. The ACC noted that the business lacked relevant experience in such procurement. The suspects face charges related to using their official positions for undue advantage under the Maldives Penal Code and the Prevention of Corruption Act.
