Maldives President Muizzu visits Pakistan to strengthen ties

Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is conducting a three-day state visit to Pakistan from October 20 to 22, 2026, marking the first visit by a Maldivian president to the country in 11 years. The visit coincides with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations established in 1966.

During the visit, leaders from both nations signed 20 memorandums of understanding (MoUs) covering a wide array of sectors, including defense, maritime security, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, healthcare, and education. A major economic goal was established to increase bilateral trade from approximately $13 million to $200 million within the next two years.

President Muizzu also used the platform to call for the revival of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), expressing readiness to work with member states to convene the next summit. Discussions also touched upon climate change, tourism, and enhancing air connectivity between the two nations.
