Maldives President Muizzu visits Pakistan to sign 20 agreements

Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu conducted a three-day visit to Pakistan, marking the first visit by a Maldivian president to the country in 11 years. The visit coincided with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

During the trip, 20 memorandums of understanding (MoUs) were signed, covering sectors such as defense, maritime security, trade, education, healthcare, technology, and climate cooperation. A key component of the visit involved discussions on defense and security, including a meeting between President Muizzu and Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, to discuss professional exchanges and the regional security environment.

The strengthening of ties with Islamabad has drawn criticism from political opposition within the Maldives, with warnings that closer security cooperation with Pakistan could potentially damage relations with India.
