Maldives seeks UN reforms and climate support

Marking 61 years of membership, the Maldives has reaffirmed its commitment to United Nations reforms aimed at providing Small Island Developing States (SIDS) with more equitable representation and a meaningful role in international decision-making. President Mohamed Muizzu emphasized that the nation seeks to expand its UN involvement, including potential elections to the Human Rights Council and Security Council.

Key national priorities include strengthening climate resilience, securing increased funding for climate adaptation, ensuring debt sustainability, and improving access to affordable financing. These efforts support the Maldives' goal of becoming a fully developed nation by 2040.

During the 81st United Nations General Assembly, the Maldivian Vice President met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres to discuss these challenges. The Secretary-General reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to supporting the Maldives in addressing climate change impacts and promoting ambitious global climate action.
