Maldives to introduce peak-hour buses for Malé and Hulhumalé
Transport Minister Mohamed Saeed has announced plans to introduce dedicated bus services to alleviate traffic congestion in the Greater Malé area. The initiative aims to provide alternatives to motorcycles and four-wheeled vehicles, particularly for commuters traveling between Hulhumalé and Malé.
Under the second phase of the transport plan, scheduled bus trips will operate during peak hours from Hulhumalé Phase 2 and the Hiyaa tower area to the Velaanaage and Green Zone areas in Malé. Additionally, the government is consulting with parents and school administrators regarding the introduction of specialized bus services for students traveling between both phases of Hulhumalé and Malé.
These measures are being implemented alongside the new Land Transport Act. Coordination of land transport will be managed by the Greater Malé Transport and Mobility Office. Current efforts to manage congestion also include increased police deployment in high-traffic areas and the installation of traffic lights at major intersections.
