Maldives tourism developments involve World Travel Awards and MTDC lease negotiations

The Maldives is advancing several tourism-related initiatives. Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC) has partnered with the national airline, Maldivian, to serve as the official local airline partner for the World Travel Awards (WTA) Asia, Oceania & Indian Ocean 2026. This partnership aims to support the preparations for the global ceremony and showcase the country's tourism offerings to international stakeholders.

Separately, the Maldives Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) is exploring alternative arrangements regarding the head lease of Gaafu Dhaalu Maguhdhuvaa. Following board opposition to a proposed USD 1.5 million sale of the lease to the operator of Ayada Maldives, officials are reportedly considering a share dilution strategy. This alternative approach may involve issuing additional shares to facilitate the transaction while working toward returning majority control of MTDC to the government.
